Speaking My Mind

Stand Up and Smile

I have been writing about manners because one look at the news tells us someone, actually all of us, needs to speak our minds about manners.  Let us not confuse modern manners with the type of detailed etiquette rules about forks and introductions and carefully written bread and butter notes.  Those are better addressed by those comfortable with state dinners and government galas.  I am more concerned about what happens on the sidewalk or the subway on an ordinary day.

A Few Thoughts on Government and Duty

I clipped these quotes some time ago thinking to use one or the other in a post.  I reread them periodically and today realized that these brilliant thinkers need nothing from me but an introduction.

Sunday Wisdom from Mr. Chomsky

Sometimes we do not look past an individuals reputation or their current stances on things to find wisdom or sound thinking .  I know that I am guilty of this.  That is not to say that we should seek wisdom or offer pithy quotations from the most vile and evil persons in our history.  However, we can open ourselves to people of all opinions if we find in their body of thought that which is relevant or worthy of remembering.  Sometimes when reading or hearing the thoughts of people who agitate or disturb us we also discover an ability to look beyond our own way of thinking and broaden our perspectives.

Speak Up! Write! Post! Don't Let the Noisy Right Speak For You

This is going to be short..to the point..and a unedited.  I a so tired of the noisy right /conservative/middle-class/somewhat educated/mostly over 50 MEN pretending to speak for me and my country and for that matter speaking as though they either know what is best for other countries (or worse saying that we the rest of the USA should not care).  I am tired of them bashing a good man and a good president just because they don’t like him or his color or his social and political goals.

Lessons We Forgot: A Reminder From Robert Fulghum

I used to h ave this in a frame on my office by the door so all could see it when they exited.  I don’t know where that framed copy is now, but I am certain it is not in Congress or even in Kindergarten classrooms.  I don’t even think parents are remembering this is out there.  It is sad to say but most of us Boomers seem to have forgotten what our mothers taught us about getting along and we certainly [1. as a gross general statement] seem to have forgotten to teach these to our children.  They are worth post with a nod and a link to Robert Fulgham at the end of the post. My Artistic Vision

I want my designs to be unique, touchable, beautiful to see and comfortable to wear. I want designs that endure the current fashion colors and styles so that it will not end up under a pile of newer things by the end of the year. Finally, I want each piece to have an owner out there unknown when I make it but who will ultimately find it and love it.
