Dedicated to the Son-of-my-Heart
I sometimes speak of my son-by-marriage (SBM) ( I loathe son-in-law — he is a son-in-heart) in these posts always with affection. However, in this post I would like to speak of him with respect and admiration. I especially love him at this moment because he generously agreed that Darling Daughter (DD) should come for nearly three weeks leaving him to complete his end of semester law school exams alone. This is the first time in three years of marriage that they have been apart for more that a couple of days and they miss each other terribly when they are apart.

Good Things Are in the Way You Look at Them
Was reading a list on Small Reflections . As I posted a comment this idea came to me about different ways of looking at downsides.
- I can’t stroll down the street past multiple cafes and coffee shops, BUT I have turkeys strolling through my yard instead of sitting in the office next to me (particularly the office with BOSS on the door).
- I am 5 hours to the nearest Trader Joe’s but when I get there I can make a side trip to a Butterfly Conservatory
- My daughter is 2000 miles away from me but she has been on another continent at time AND tomorrow she arrives for a 3 week visit.
- I can’t get my favorite wine here BUT I discovered a splendid alternative AND when I go to Portland in the spring I can go to the vineyard and buy several cases.
- I am over a 1000 miles from the ocean, but I live less than a half mile to a huge lake and NOW we can afford to buy a sailboat AND a slip.
- My house is so small that I have to store excess furniture BUT we do not have to spend hours driving to jobs we hate to support it.
- My yard is more weeds than grass and sassafras trees sprout all over the place BUT I have no home owners association to tell me I can’t plant native grasses and plants (which they would call weeds) to feed the deer and turkeys and birds and raccoons and rabbits and woodchucks and???
- I have to drive 150 miles to get my Audi worked on but my when I do— I can go to the Wild Oats market and visit my parents and the Audi seldom needs work even though it is 5 years old.
- The summers are humid here BUT it doesn’t get REALLY hot until August and NOW we have the time off and can afford to go someplace cool for August.
- There is very little classical music venue in this area BUT my DB has time and energy to play the piano every day.
I Love Lists
- I love lists.
- They are neat and orderly and U can mark things off with such pleasure.
- You can also ball them up and toss them in the round file, burn them or lose them.
Decisions — More Ups Than Downs
When my DB and I decided to leave our much-loved Portland, Oregon to move back to Arkansas (well back for me, DB was from Dallas) it was a decision that we knew in the long term was exactly the one that would help us achieve our dreams. Leaving Portland was difficult as we left our daughter and son-by-marriage along with many things that we enjoy:
